Recently my little girl and I were sent a pack from Little Robin Education, a book subscription created to inspire the next generation of nature lovers. There are three age groups currently available: under 3, 3-7 year-olds, and 8-12 year-olds. Inside your pack, you’ll find a nature fiction book. This month we received ‘Saving Mr. Hoot’ by Helen Stephens.
‘Saving Mr. Hoot’ (32 pages, Alison Green Books) is a colourful, heart-warming story about a boy who saves a local tawny owl’s home from being cut down. It encourages little ones to respect and protect wildlife as well as stand up for what they believe in. As well as the book there’s also a pack of colorful flashcards perfect for playing games and learning more about the creatures featured in the book. I love these as Penny can take them outside with her on our walks, sort and play with them to help reinforce new information and improve her recall. Also, as Little Robin Education is an eco-friendly business, all of the cards are printed on recycled card and the bags are organic cotton.
Our pack also contained a thirteen-page activity book full of play and learning ideas linked to Development Matters and the Key Stage 1 curriculum. They also offer 50% off sibling copies if you require extra. Inside there was a scavenger hunt, colouring pages, literacy activities, more information about an owl’s autonomy and wingspan as well as lots of ideas to help encourage curious minds.
Penny adores sticking on her wellies, exploring outside, and getting messy but, I have to admit, it’s been so cold and miserable here, so we’ve not ventured out in a while. This pack really encouraged us both to restart our mini-adventures. Penny especially loved her flashcards and used the bag provided to collect strange-looking stones and funny-looking leaves on one of our walks. Little Robin Learning gives children the opportunity to explore their surroundings and ask questions while gently encouraging them to respect the world around them and build a connection with nature through the magic of books.
