Tipple Box: August 2017

One of life’s most simple pleasures is good company and there’s nothing that I enjoy more than spending an evening in with friends and family. Add some fine drinks to that evening, and it’s often better than actually going out!

I love trying boozy subscription boxes (I am a student after all!) and I was over the moon to be given the opportunity to review Tipple Box; the UK’s No 1 monthly cocktail delivery club. Tipple Box have been around since 2014 and they have quickly established themselves within the market as the go-to box for anyone who enjoys trying new cocktail recipes. They work with some of the best artisan distilleries around the UK to bring you high-quality spirits, alongside equally high-quality mixers, so that you can make the cocktails easily at home.

Tipple Box certainly have an eye for design and they really pay special attention to every single detail in their boxes, including the box itself. You can tell that a lot of love and passion has gone into this company and it shines through the minute that you receive the box. Everything was packaged safely in lots of bubble wrap and the box itself is very sturdy to contain all the glass bottles.

Inside the box, I found a copy of the new Muddle magazine – a fantastic magazine for subscribers which contains news and culture features, alongside cocktail and product suggestions. This month’s magazine is very much focused on the Edinburgh Fringe Festival which provided an interesting read!

Alongside your spirits and mixers, Tipple Box also include some snacks which came in the form of a bag of Portlebay Popcorn in Lemon Sherbert (sweet and crunchy – so yummy!) and a can of Juicy Fuel Cola in Blueberry (a fruity natural energy drink). I thought these were great extras to go with the box.

Onto the spirits! August’s Tipple Box is focused on Edinburgh Gin and contains four miniature bottles from the artisan brand; Seaside Gin, Plum & Vanilla Liqueur, Elderflower Liqueur and their original Gin. I haven’t tried anything from Edinburgh Gin before, but I love gin cocktails so I was very excited to try everything.

Next to the spirits, I found three mixers; a bottle of Fentiman’s 19:05 Herbal Tonic Water, Luscombe English Apple Juice and a smaller bottle of Norfolk Cordial in Wild Elderflower. An interesting selection!

Every Tipple Box has enough for two people to enjoy two different cocktails, and they provide a new cocktail recipe for you to try out in the comfort of your own home.

The first cocktail that I tried was called Edin-Flower Collins and it’s a summery take on the classic Tom Collins cocktail. To make this I used 25ml Edinburgh Gin, 25ml Elderflower Liqueur, 10ml Wildflower Cordial and 100ml Tonic Water. I poured everything into a cocktail shaker with some ice, strained it into a glass, and finished it off with some fresh Mint leaves and a slice of Lime.

The Edin-Flower Collins cocktail was so refreshing and delicious! A lovely drink to enjoy on a hot summer’s day when you’re sitting in the garden.

The second cocktail was called Summer In Burgh and this is a really fruity and summery one. It uses 25ml Seaside Gin, 25ml Plum Liqueur, 10ml Elderflower Cordial and 100ml Apple Juice. You’ll also need some fresh Mint Leaves and some Strawberries, which I muddled at the bottom of the glass. I poured all of the ingredients into a shaker, added ice and strained it into the glass, giving everything a good old stir afterwards. I quickly realised that I’d added too many Strawberries to the glass, so I took these out and just used one on the side as a garnish – it still worked out really well!

Summer In The Burgh is an explosively fruity cocktail and the addition of the Seaside Gin added a nice fresh kick to it. I’d happily make this all Summer long!

Our score: 9.6/ 10

If you love making cocktails at home and want to try some new and different ones, Tipple Box is a fantastic box to sign up to. Both of the gin cocktail recipes in this month's box were amazing, and it also served as a great introduction to the Edinburgh Gin company.
