My VitiBox – January 2020

As Dry January comes to a close this week, I was looking forward to receiving this month’s My VitiBox even more so than usual! If you haven’t heard of this before, My VitiBox is a French wine subscription box which delivers via courier to the UK. You don’t have to worry about any breakages along the way as the wines are carefully packaged in ‘shockproof’ boxes and all of the wines that you’ll receive have been specially selected by the famed sommelier Philippe Defleur (former sommelier of La Tour d’Argent and the Élysée Palace).

Below are the contents of January’s My VitiBox as part of their Colours & Flavours subscription:-

Domaine Maby – Baroques Vin De Pays 2017

History: Produced by the fourth generation of the Domaine Maby estate, the family business has undergone a change to sustainable agriculture so all of the wines from recent years are bursting with even more flavour. Philippe chose Baroques Vin De Pays 2017 because he has declared it one of his best finds of the last 12 months so subscribers are in for a real treat this month!

Grape: This wine is made from 50% Cinsault and 50% Syrah grapes.

Senses: A clear and shiny ruby red colour in the glass, this wine has a pleasant and expressive aroma which is very fruity. It’s bone-dry, yet fresh with a full-bodied texture that has marked but delicate tannins. Beautifully smooth, it has lovely flavours of Blueberry, Raspberry, Red Currants and Black Pepper. It pairs well with dishes such as Eggplant Purée and desserts like Strawberry Panna Cotta.

Domaine des Pins – Tradition des Pins Cru Saint-Amour 2017

History: Another red wine but this time is chosen for its romantic name and high quality. Produced by the Polosse family who took over the Domaine des Pins estate back in 2016, their winemaking area is growing even bigger now and they now produce only with chemicals when absolutely necessary.

Grape: 100% Gamay.

Senses: In the glass, it presents as a sensational clear cherry red with a pleasant and expressive aroma, which like the wine above, is also dominantly very fruity. This wine is also bone-dry, lovely, medium-bodied with light and delicate tannins, yet it has a much softer texture on the palate. I enjoyed the fruity notes of Raspberry and Strawberry which contrast nicely with the spicier elements of Black Pepper and Nutmeg which give the wine some added warmth. Pairs well with dishes such as Eggs in Red Wine Sauce and desserts like Raspberry and Cottage Cheese.

Our score: 9.8/ 10
