The Wine List – Februrary 2020

Like many people, I enjoy a glass (or two!) of wine at the end of a long day or as a treat at the weekend, and one of the newest wine subscription boxes that I’ve recently been introduced to is called The Wine List.

The Wine List is described as a ‘monthly wine course’ where you’ll receive two bottles of fine wine, alongside a complete Introduction & Tasting Guide to help you to fully discover the flavours and learn more about the wine that has been delivered to your door.

There are also two Taste Notes cards where you can circle/tick certain categories as you taste the flavours, and space at the bottom to write down your own notes on the wines for your personal future reference.

Here’s what I found inside this month’s The Wine List box:-

Buketo White Buketo 2018

Starting with the white, I was pleasantly surprised to come across this bottle from Greece which is made in the Macedonia region. Here, the winery purchases selected grapes from a handful of grape growers across the region and blends different varieties together. The composition of this wine is 40% Malagouisa, 30% Assyrtiko and 30% Sauvignon Blanc, so it’s very different to white wines that I have tasted before.

On the palate, it has notes of Stone Fruits, Herbs and Minerality and there’s a fresh and lively flavour that brings to mind relaxed evenings in the sunshine – a lovely Summery wine to lift spirits at this time of the year in miserable England!

Petites Estones Red Sergi Montala 2017

Next, I tried the red which is a Spanish wine made in the Montsant region. Founded in 2008 by two friends, this winery also purchases selected grapes from nearby villages and likes to use different varieties to mix things up. Here were have a blend of Garnacha and Samso grapes.

After opening the bottle at room temperature, this wine has a beautiful colour in the glass and an expressive aroma on the nose. Taste-wise, it’s bursting with fresh young Red Fruits such as Cherries and Raspberries, and there are some slightly Peppery notes which add a little spice. It has silky tannins thanks to being fermented in stainless steel and then being stored for seven months in oak, adding a lovely softness to the overall flavour.
