Bokksu: Discover Japan Through Snacks – November 2018

Bokksu is the only Japanese snack box that sources directly from snack makers in Japan, so many of our artisanal products cannot be found anywhere else. Start your cultural journey through Japan by subscribing to Bokksu and receiving a curated box of premium Japanese snacks and teas delivered to your door every month.
They have two levels of subscription: the Tasting, which is smaller, and the one I have received, The Classic.Subscriptions are prepaid for one, three, six, or twelve months. For the Classic box they work out at $39 (around £30), $37, $35 , and $33 per month. As usual, they are priced in dollars, so GBP conversion is according to today’s exchange rate. Obviously this will vary, but it gives you some idea of cost.
The presentation box is shipped inside an outer cardboard box, so it stays protected and looking very nice indeed.
This month’s theme is Tea Story, so I’m expecting lots of tea-related items in here.
Here’s a bit of background to the theme, plus apparently there’s a little bonus snack. Delicious!
Here’s the menu. It’s a double folded sheet, so needs two pictures for the whole thing. It’s got details of all the snacks, plus a list of allergens.
Ice Coffee Choco Sand sounds strange, but it’s nothing to do with sand! These are mini sandwich cookies, and this variety are chocolate cookies sandwiched with coffee cream.
These are incredibly pretty. Foliage Rice Crackers are little leaf-shaped rice crackers in eight different flavours: anori (green seaweed), soy & white sesame, sesame & mayo,  sugar, matcha, mustard, turmeric, and purple sweet potato. Very autumnal!
Yamematcha Mini Dorayaki, a traditional Japanese sweet of two flat cakes with red bean paste inside. This version is filled with matcha and white bean paste. They even come with a little plastic fork!
Matcha Milk Beans  are another exclusive candy made especially for Bokksu. They are matcha chocolate-coated peanuts, and are nutty and not too sweet.
This is a savory snack, Olive Oil Spicy Pepper Senbei. These crispy rice crackers are lovely and spicy from the pepper.
Matcha Chocolate Coated Peacans are exactly what they sound like, and are amazing. I love pecans, and the combination with the matcha chocolate is really tasty.
A sandwich cake this time, Gogo No Koucha Mila Tea Cake have tea leaves right inside the dough, and the cream contains both tea and milk. This combination is inspired by Milk Tea.
Alfort Milk Tea Chocolate  is little cookies encased in tea flavoured milk chocolate. It’s surprisingly rich and very nice indeed.
These mochi are incredibly light and fluffy. The Kinako variety has been featured in Bokksu before, but this is a savory version Hokkaido Cheese Mochi. They have  an incredible texture, rather like eating crispy clouds!
This month’s tea is very interesting.  Genmaicha  is a blend of sencha leaves with roasted brown rice, which gives the tea a lovey toasted flavour.
Here are my little bonus snacks: Hojicha Latte Chocolate Mochi. They are little soft rice cakes flavoured with hojicha (green tea) and filled with hojicha chocolate cream.
My favourite item this month is the Hokkaido Cheese Mochi, because the texture is so incredible and they’re incredibly tasty.
I really like the theme, it’s a lot of fun trying all the different tea-related snacks. It’s amazing how much variety is produced in these little goodies, both in texture and flavour. Everything pulls together really nicely with this theme.
Bokksu is a terrific way to sample more gourmet and artisan snack food items from Japan.  You can experience flavours and food items you’re not going to find anywhere else, and they are a real treat for the tastebuds!
