Boatyard Double Gin (700ml, 40%)
The star of May’s box is a full-size bottle of Boatyard Double Gin, a truly exquisite gin which is expertly distilled on Lough Erne in Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. This is the first time that I’ve tried an Irish gin before and I have to say that I’m thoroughly impressed! This gin is infused with a wide range of botanicals (Juniper, Coriander, Licorice Root, Angelica, Orris, Lemon Peel, Grains of Paradise and Sweet Gale), and has a wonderful piney freshness to it due to the unique double distillation process which is used at the Boatyard Distillery. Whilst Juniper is the most dominant flavour, there are also some really lovely lighter notes of Vanilla and Liquorice which gives it a balanced sweetness. An amazing gin to add to your spirits collection!
Merchant’s Heart Tonics in Hint of Peppercorn and Floral Aromatics + Britvic Tomato Juice Cocktail
To complement the gin, there are three premium mixers in this month’s box. Two are from Merchant’s Heart which are described as ‘spirit enhancers’ and they really do add something special to a good old G&T! I received a bottle of their Hint of Peppercorn and a bottle of the Floral Aromatics Tonic Waters – both of which had a delightful, refreshing and clean taste.
I must admit that I’m not the biggest fan of Tomato Juice as a mixer, so my housemates have happily taken that one off my hands, but they really enjoyed it.
Indie Bay Snacks in Spelt Pretzel Bites Rock Salt + Baileys Mini Delights
The snacks this month are fantastic additions to the box. There’s a bag of Spelt Pretzel Bites from Indie Bay Snacks (these are perfect to nibble on when you’re enjoying a cold drink and they’re only 99 calories per pack too), and a bag of Baileys Mini Delights which fits with the Irish theme nicely and these are absolutely delicious.
After trying the Boatyard Double Gin, I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more Irish gins in the future as I think they could definitely give their Whiskey industry a run for its money in the high-end spirits sales!
