I was very excited to receive a box from Green Chef – here’s what they sent me! To help show some of the meals that they offered, a selected a range of the diet options to give an idea of the variety on offer from Green Chef.
Meal One – Jerk Spiced Steak with Sweet Potato Mash and Black Bean Salad (Balanced option)
This first meal is a Balanced option that serves 2 people and contains 3 portions of your 5 a day. This is a great option for those who still eat meat but want to pack in some veggies as well. Marcos are 66g Carbs, 43g Protein and 609 calories per meal.
Ready in just 20-25 minutes, the recipe card was indeed easy to follow and the portion sizes were plentiful – there’s a lot of food on the plate! All of the ingredients were fresh and the Beef Rump Steak was a huge size. My housemates tried this and whilst they enjoyed the steak, they weren’t that keen on the Caribbean Style Jerk seasoning and said it was overly salty so they’d recommend using less seasoning than it states if you try this meal.
Meal Two: Harissa Spiced King Prawns with Roasted Vegetables and Crumbled Feta (Keto option)
Many keto recipes use chicken as the standard meat so my housemates asked for a recipe that contained prawns instead for this option. This dish serves 2 and provides 3 of your 5 a day. Macros are 19g Carbs, 35g Protein, 27g Fat and 458 calories per meal.
The Harissa Spiced King Prawns were a big hit and cooked beautifully thanks to their freshness and my housemates also enjoyed the bed of Roasted Vegetables which kept them feeling full until dinner. The only niggle with this one was the addition of the Feta Cheese which neither of my housemates said worked with the overall flavours of this dish, but as always, it comes down to personal preference – I’m sure many would love it!
Meal Three: Vegan Mango & Tamari Poke Rice Bowl (Vegan option)
Green Chef has a huge range of vegetarian and vegan recipes on their website that you can try and I was curious to opt for a Vegan one to see what they would send. For a vegan dish though, I was disappointed that this meal only contains 1 portion of your 5 a day as you would think a vegetarian or vegan option would be a great way to pack in more veggies so I found this a little strange. The macros are 73g Carbs, 6g Protein, 24g Fat and 533 calories. Again, I was also disappointed that the protein amount was so low as there are plenty of plant-based protein options that they could have included in this meal to up the numbers.
Unfortunately, this dish was a bit of a disaster as the Mango they sent wasn’t ripe and didn’t ripen in my fruit bowl, even after 4 or 5 days after the delivery box arrived, so I had to make it without. The flavours were nice but it didn’t ‘wow’ me and could have been better thought out.
