I always look forward to opening these boxes as gin is my favourite tipple of choice and I’m absolutely thrilled with this month’s selection. July’s I Love Gin box is themed The Italian Summer Box and contains:-
- Malfy Con Arancia Gin (50ml)
- Malfy Rosa Gin (50ml)
- Fever Tree Refreshingly Light Indian Tonic Water (200ml)
- Fever Tree Refreshingly Light Mediterraen Tonic Water (200ml)
Both of the gins this month are from the Italian brand Malfy and the bottles are so beautiful and summery! Apparently, gin has been quite famous historically in Italy for a very long time and may actually pre-date the origins of gin which go back to being sourced from the Dutch spirit called genever. In fact, the first ever reference to what we now know of ‘Gin’ dates back to a collection of books that were written by Italian monks in 1055 and refer to a medicinal tonic wine which was infused with juniper berries. Those clever monks, eh?!
On the left we have the Malfy Rosa Gin, a beautiful pale pink gin which gets its colour from sun-ripened Pink Grapefruits from the Mediterranean coast, and Italian Rhubarb, both of which are the two main flavours in this gin. This really is like tasting the best of summer all in one bottle as the flavours are so fruity and rich, yet there’s still that distinctive juniper coming through afterwards. Certainly one of the best ‘pink’ gins that I’ve tried so far.
On the right is the Malfy Con Arancia Gin whose key botanical is Blood Orange Peel that’s sourced from Sicily. The peels are steeped in alcohol after they are harvested in November and they’re then pressed in a traditional basket press. After that, they’re blended with juniper and other botanicals before being distilled in a stainless steel vacuum still. This gives the gin a pure and clean taste, but still maintains those lovely citrusy orange notes.
The mixers this month are from one of my favourite tonic water brands, Fever Tree. These two are from their brand new Refreshingly Light range which are made to their same recipes, but uses naturally sourced fruit sugars that results in fewer calories overall. Sounds like a win-win situation to me!
The Mediterranean Tonic contains a blend of floral botanicals such as flowers, fruits and herbs which are gathered from the famous Mediterranean coast, and then infused with Spring Water and Quinine. The Indian Tonic is what I’d call a more traditional and purer tonic water and it mainly uses natural Quinine for its delicate flavour. Both are refreshing and the perfect matches for the Malfy gins.
I particularly enjoyed mixing the Malfy Rosa Gin with the Fever Tree Indian Tonic Water as it has all the hallmarks of a classic G&T, but with a Summery twist. The perfect drink for your Summer BBQs and parties!
