I’m reviewing their original box, the LootCrate, which contains 4 – 5 items each month, including exclusive and licensed items, with a value of at least $45.
They have four subscription levels:
- 1 month – £24 p/m
- 3 months – £22 p/m
- 6 months – £21 p/m
- 12 months – £21 p/m plus a bonus t-shirt
- All crates include a t-shirt; you select your size when you order your subscription.
This month’s theme is MYTHICAL.
This looks promising!
Check out this awesome T-Shirt! The classic Ghostbusterslogo with a fabulous 80s neon twist! I love this design.
This is another Phat Mojo exclusive figure.
It’s Thor vs Loki! This is a new collaboration between Lootcrate and Phat Mojo; last month’s box contained their first figure.
Ah, Buffy. I love this show. She used to call her trusty stake Mr Pointy. This is a bookmark made from poplar wood.
It looks very cool, especially with the ‘B’ logo.
This is definitely this month’s top item. Season 2 of Stranger Things has just hit Netflix, so this is perfectly timed!
Inside the box. You put the pieces together to get…
This fantastic scene! It’s the climactic scene from the last episode of Season One, when Eleven defeats the Demogorgon.
The style is almost Funko-like, and it’s a very cool ornament.
This month’s Loot Pin is Dracula. Very Halloween-y. I really like the retro-comic design.
Also in the box is the menu booklet.
Conclusions
LootCrate claims that each box contains at least $45 (about £35) worth of goodies. Every item is a LootCrate exclusive, so it’s difficult to assign a commercial value. However I can sort of find equivalents and guesstimate, though I don’t use eBay as I find their prices are not a useful guide to value. I’ll also add my thoughts as I go along.
T-shirt – geeky t-shirts usually retail around £10.
Loki vs Thor Figure: this is a Loot Crate exclusive, and I can’t find an equivalent. Phat Mojo are kind of hard to price, so I’ll be generous and put it at £10. It’s a pretty small figure so I think that’s a fair value.
Bookmark: Again, an exclusive. I’d say £5, to be generous.
Strange Things Scene: This is awesome, and very on point right now. It’s also of a decent size. I’ll call it £15.
Pin – again, total exclusive, but comic pins are around £5.
Total: £45
So even for your 1-month subscription price you’ve got plenty of bang for your buck.
Here are my thoughts:
The t-shirt is fantastic, one of the best I’ve ever had! Even though it’s too big for regular wear, I love my collection of LootCrate nightshirts!
The Loki/Thor figure is OK, but it’s actually not very good quality. It came in pieces to assemble, and the heads kept falling off as they did not fit well on the body pieces. If you look closely you can see the paint job is really rather shoddy. Last month’s Aliens figure from the same range was so fantastic (and better put-together) this one felt a bit of a letdown. I put the value at £10 to match last month’s figure, but this one is not a great example.
The bookmark is cute, and I’m a huge Buffy fan, so I’m never going to complain about anything from Buffy! However it’s definitely more ornamental than useful, because it’s too thick to use on regular pages without damaging them.
The Strange Things model is wonderful. It’s original, the quality is excellent, and it shows an iconic moment from a spectacular show.
The pin is great, I like the aesthetic, and it’s a great addition to the collection!
This box is a big hit for me. Even though I don’t really like the figure, I love all four franchises. The Stranger Things model is inspired, and even the t-shirt is incredibly original with that retro design.
I love this month’s LootCrate!
